Gibsonton, FL

Have you heard about Gibsonton, FL, but not really know what it's about or where why it exists?

Gibsonton is the home of the showman's club and museum. Gibsonton is most notably known as carneyville, though that gives a really negative connotation. Yes, many carnival show people lived there, but the town has so much more history to it. Gibsonton was founded by James Gibson Senior, from Greenville, Alabama in 1884. He had homesteaded 150 acres along the bank of the Alafia River extending East approximately half a mile along the south bank of the river. Gibson along with Granville Platte and F.L. Henderson became trustees of a school erected in 1888. Gibson also encompasses a little area called Adamsville. It's really in the southern part of the town almost to Apollo Beach. Gibsonton’s CDP has a total area of 15.4 square miles of which 12.8 square miles are land and 2.6 square miles are water. Gibsonton is also home to the little area called Gardenville where they had the schoolhouse and park founded in 1961. The schoolhouse is now home to an aging services and recreation area and is part of the Hillsborough County Parks and Recreation system. The Showman's Club and Museum pays honor to the show people of yesteryears who all started wintering right here in Gibsonton. They also still hold festivals and fairs such as bike week and other great fun things right there on the showmen fairgrounds. Check it out sometime!
